Throughout the winter gala season, "Sentimental Value" in general and Norwegian film star Stellan Skarsgård in particular have been seen as clear favorites to receive nominations for the Oscars on March 15 after being praised by critics and ranking high on the charts.
Skarsgård has also spent a lot of time in the US in recent months promoting the film.
Shocking diss
But now it seems that sand has gotten in the gears. "Sentimental Value" received no awards at all at the Critics Choice Awards last weekend, despite several chances to win, and was completely without nominations for the actors' union SAG's prestigious gala when they were released this week.
"A shocking diss," writes industry magazine Variety in an analysis.
The newspaper speculates that it may be a reaction to the Hollywood Film Academy's increasing emphasis on foreign productions after including many international film workers in recent years among the 11,000 who vote for Oscar nominations.
Five days left
Enough is enough, is the thinking.
"I talk to these people every day and there is a feeling that they want to keep all the awards in America," an anonymous academy member told Variety.
The Golden Globes are widely seen as the second most prestigious awards ceremony in Hollywood and are decided five days before Oscar ballots are due. Who wins the awards at the Golden Globes could influence how many people choose to cast their votes.
The Oscar nominations will be presented on January 22.
