Just like the rest of the Norwegian men's national football team, Ørjan Nyland was celebrated during this summer's World Cup in North America when the team successfully made it to the quarter-finals.
But in Sunday night's Nations League match against Portugal, who were eliminated by eventual world champions Spain in the round of 16 at the World Cup, at Ullevål in Oslo, the veteran goalkeeper had the upper hand. His missed pass straight to Gonçalo Ramos, who then coolly lifted the ball in, decided the match in the 54th minute.
Nyland also made another mistake just a few minutes after Ramos' 2-1 goal. The 36-year-old was outside his own penalty area to kick the ball away, but missed and could see Ramos pick it up and roll it in for 3-1. However, the goal was ruled out for offside after video review and did not count.
Portuguese veteran striker Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, remained on the bench throughout the match. João Félix scored Portugal's 1-0 goal in the first half and Erling Braut Haaland equalized for Norway early in the second, three minutes before Nyland's error and Ramos' winning goal.
In parallel with the match in Oslo, Germany lost 0-1 at home to Greece in Augsburg under new national team coach Jürgen Klopp. The star coach thus suffered a historic nightmare result in his first match in front of his home crowd. Germany had never lost to Greece in men's football before the Nations League match, according to several media outlets.
