After taking into account known phenomena that affect temperature, such as El Niño and volcanic eruptions, researchers from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Research have for the first time found a statistically significant increase in the rate of warming.

Over the past ten years, the rate of warming has been approximately 0.35 degrees per decade, compared to just under 0.2 degrees per decade on average between 1970 and 2015, and higher than any previous decade since measurements began in 1880.

"If the warming rate of the last ten years continues, it will lead to the Paris Agreement's limit of 1.5 degrees of warming being exceeded in the long term before 2030," says the study's lead author, Stefan Rahmstorf, in a comment.

The study was published in Geophysical Research Letters.
