The current glacier law protects glaciers from mining. The revised law presented by Argentine President Javier Milei allows regional authorities, instead of the Ianigla research institute, to regulate which areas should be protected.
A number of environmental organizations say the law will be appealed.
Large mineral deposits are located near Argentina's glaciers. According to estimates from the mining industry, investments of more than $30 billion could become a reality if the law change is not stopped, writes AP.
Mining creates dust, which accelerates the melting of glaciers.
