A 11-year-old girl was found brutally stabbed to death in a small town south of Paris over the weekend. No one has been arrested and security is being tightened ahead of the school week.

On Friday afternoon, an alarm was raised that the girl had disappeared after leaving her school in the suburban municipality of Épinay-sur-Orge. During the night to Saturday, she was found dead in a forest area a few hundred meters from the school, with a large number of stab wounds, French media report.

A hundred police officers have worked in the area during the following days, but without finding any significant leads. A man and a woman were detained at an early stage, as the man was suspected of being a man seen passing the girl on a surveillance film, but the couple was later released.

No other suspects have been arrested. Nothing indicates that any sexual violence occurred in connection with the murder, the prosecutor has emphasized.

On Monday morning, the authorities have tightened security at schools and along roads where children walk to school in Épinay-sur-Orge and the neighboring town of Longjumeau.

"Thanks also to the parents of students who are mobilizing by organizing walking school buses or ensuring that children have company," one of the municipalities announced via social media.
