Dominic Frimpong, a Berekum Chelsea player, lost his life when masked men opened fire on the team bus as the driver tried to turn it around. Players and officials fled to an adjacent forest area, the club said in a statement.
Frimpong, 20, was shot and taken to hospital where he later died.
"The tragic incident is not only a great loss for Berekum Chelsea but also for Ghanaian football," the Ghana Football Association said in a statement, promising to increase security for clubs' travel to matches.
In 2023, another team bus was attacked in Ghana, but no one was injured.
