Germany's Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has urged China to use its influence to put pressure on Russia over the war in Ukraine.

"If there is one country in the world that has strong influence on Russia, it is China," he said at a press conference in Beijing after meeting with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.

Wadephul's "appeal to the Chinese side" was to try to get Russia to realize "that they can now come to the negotiating table."

In an interconnected world, the security of Asia and Europe is inextricably linked. Together with China, we have a common interest in a stable international order.

China is a major trading partner of Russia and has remained neutral on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, while emphasizing the importance of respecting the territorial integrity of countries.
