The powerhouse Germany did not get a good start to the qualifying campaign and lost their first World Championship qualifying match ever on away ground. Slovakia pulled off an upset and won 2–0.

Twice David. Twice German nightmare. David Hancko and David Strelec – that's what Slovakia's big heroes are called after a surprising victory in the World Championship qualifier against Germany.

In the 42nd match minute, Hancko struck and gave his country a 1–0 lead into the break.

After the break, many probably thought that Germany would make a comeback, but no.

Instead, Strelec could brilliantly punctuate the match to 2–0. The 24-year-old placed the ball in the cross after having dribbled away the German center back and Real Madrid star Antonio Rüdiger.

The loss was Germany's first away defeat in World Championship qualifying in 91 years.

Other major nations withstood the pressure in the first qualifying round. Spain away defeated Bulgaria with 3–0 and Belgium away defeated Liechtenstein with 6–0. The Netherlands went for an important scalp at home against Poland, but the Poles equalized late to 1–1.

Sweden's World Championship qualifying begins on Friday, against Slovenia away.
