Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa will visit Germany next week and will meet Germany's President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, at a time when the German government wants more Syrians to return to their homeland.
It is not clear whether Chancellor Friedrich Merz will meet with al-Sharaa.
Ahmed al-Sharaa is a former jihadist affiliated with al-Qaeda and the al-Nusra Front, which is designated a terrorist organization by the US, EU and the UN. He led the forces of the Islamist movement Hayat Tahrir al-Sham when they overthrew former leader Bashar al-Assad in late 2024.
