The German government's move was made at a press conference in Berlin, where the visiting Israeli foreign minister Gideon Saar also participated.
Wadepuhl said that "negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians must first be concluded" before it is time to declare Palestine's sovereignty.
Sweden has already declared a Palestinian sovereign state in 2014. Spain, Norway and Ireland did the same last year.
