Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz will receive the heads of government from Austria, the Netherlands, Denmark and Finland today. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) will also participate digitally, his deputy press secretary told TT.

The goal is to reach a compromise ahead of the autumn's continued disputes over the EU's next long-term budget. The six participating countries believe that the Commission's proposals and the compromises put forward so far are far too large.

The overall budget must be cut significantly, by hundreds of billions of euros, Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker says, according to Politico.

European Council President António Costa - who is leading the budget negotiations - is simultaneously touring the various member states to assess the situation.
