The message came from German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Thursday. The day before, the Iranian ambassador was summoned to the German Foreign Ministry to receive a formal protest.

We have repeatedly and unequivocally made it clear to Tehran that the execution of a German citizen will have serious consequences, said Baerbock.

The current consulates are located in Frankfurt, Munich, and Hamburg.

Iran responded sharply on Thursday. The German ambassador in Tehran was summoned to the country's Foreign Ministry for a formal protest against "an irrational decision that cannot be defended."

Sharmahd was kidnapped in 2020, according to his family, from the United Arab Emirates to Iran, where he was sentenced to death, accused of leading a group that, according to Iran, carried out terrorist attacks on a mosque in the country. The trial was criticized for being summary, and the regime-critical Sharmahd had long been sought after by Iran's regime.

Sharmahd's German citizenship had no significance in the Iranian legal process.
