Germany and France Finalize Strategy for Europe’s Auto Industry, Backing Flexibility on 2035 Phaseout

A Franco-German strategy for Europe’s automotive industry has been finalized, the German government said in a press release. The strategy is based on relaxing the EU’s goal of phasing out cars powered by fossil fuels by 2035.

"We want to successfully manage the transformation of our automotive industry, stick to our climate goals and ensure that the cars of the future are produced in Europe," the government writes.

The press release lacks details, but the strategy is described as an “ambitious European reduction in carbon emissions, with the necessary flexibility in the regulatory framework to accommodate different market conditions and technical openness.”

Incentives for investment, research and development, European production and resilient supply chains are also included in the package.

Franco-German talks on the issue have been ongoing since last summer. The strategy must also be approved by the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament.
