In light of the war in Ukraine and the threat from Russia, Poland last year announced plans to reinforce a long stretch of its border with Belarus and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. Now, German soldiers are also to be sent to Poland to assist in the reinforcement work.
The soldiers are expected to participate in the project from the second quarter of 2026 to the end of 2027. Their main tasks will be to build fortifications, dig trenches, lay barbed wire and erect tank barriers, according to a spokesperson for the German Ministry of Defense.
The number of German soldiers participating is not specified in more detail, but according to the spokesperson it is a "mid-double-digit number."
