The former foreign minister, Social Democrat Steinmeier, said in a speech on Tuesday that "a deep rift" had emerged between Germany and the United States.
Trust in American power politics has been lost - not only in Europe but throughout the world, he said in a speech at the German Foreign Ministry.
The sharp words were directed at the United States, at President Donald Trump personally, and at Israel:
There is no possibility of going back to the time before January 20, 2025, Steinmeier said, referring to the day Trump was sworn in as president.
He added that he believes Israel and the US's war against Iran "violates international law."
