The Borussia Dortmund center-back Nico Schlotterbeck was injured in the match against Ivory Coast, and after an MRI scan it was determined that he had suffered a serious ligament injury to his ankle.
The injury is expected to keep the 26-year-old out of action for 6–8 weeks.
"A huge blow for Germany," wrote Sky reporter Patrick Berger on X.
Germany have had a perfect start to the World Cup with victories over both Curaçao and Ivory Coast. The team is already set to advance from Group 1. Schlotterbeck started in both matches.
