The German Formula 1 driver Jochen Maas has died.
It is with a heavy heart that we need to tell that Jochen Maas has passed away in complications after a stroke in February", says his family in a statement.
Maas competed in F1 for, among others, McLaren 1973-1982. He was a contemporary of the Swedish F1 legend Ronnie Peterson and won one race – in Spain 1975.
But it was overshadowed by an accident in the same race where Rolf Stommelen drove off the track. Stommelen's car started burning and four spectators were killed and twelve injured.
In 1989, Jochen Maas won the 24-hour race Le Mans.
Maas became 78 years old.
