In Germany, the composite purchasing managers' index fell to 48.3 in April, from 51.9 in March. Analysts' expectations were 51.2.

The purchasing managers' index for the services sector for France was 46.5, compared with the expected 48.5.

The weighted index for the French economy, which also includes the manufacturing industry, was 47.6 and is therefore still below the growth threshold.

For the eurozone as a whole, the manufacturing PMI rose slightly, from 51.6 to 52.2. The composite index was 48.6, according to preliminary figures. This was slightly worse than the expected 50.1 and lower than the previous month's 50.7.
