Barcelona star has been on site but not been seen during the week's European Championship training camp in Åhus. Instead of training with the national team, the focus has been on investigations of the injured left foot. The plan is still that Fridolina Rolfö follows the rest of the squad to Oslo for Thursday's dress rehearsal against Norway, but she is not an option for play.
Can she be involved in the European Championship premiere against Denmark in Geneva next Friday? National team coach Peter Gerhardsson says he does not know.
We do not know. Or I do not know, says Gerhardsson at a press conference in Åhus.
No answers from the doctors
He refers further to the medical team. But during the week's gathering in Skåne, the national team doctors have not been available for questions about Rolfö's status.
”Fridolina's follow-up examinations are ongoing, in parallel with further dialogue between the national team and the club team. At present, we therefore do not have the opportunity to provide any further updates”, was the only official statement on Wednesday.
Fridolina Rolfö suffered ligament injuries in the foot in the Nations League match against Denmark on June 3 and has not been able to train since then. The European Championship premiere is approaching quickly, and the question is how long Sweden can wait for a player of Rolfö's caliber.
I cannot answer such hypothetical questions, says Gerhardsson.
What can be noted is that Fridolina is one of Sweden's absolute best football players.
Difference between players and players
Assistant national team coach Magnus Wikman admits, however, that there is a difference between players and players in such a situation. Even if Rolfö becomes an option only later in the tournament, it may be worth having her with them in Switzerland.
It is clear that certain players and certain roles can make a difference, if everyone is to be available all minutes in all matches against someone who can only be available for fewer minutes as a substitute or later in a tournament. It can absolutely make a difference between players and players, says Wikman.
Tottenham player Matilda Vinberg has been called up to the European Championship squad as a reserve, and will follow to both Norway and Switzerland.
