Last summer, Santos admitted to deceiving donors and stealing nearly a dozen personal details, including those of his own family members, to finance his election campaign.

As part of a settlement, Santos has agreed to pay approximately 580,000 dollars (equivalent to approximately 5.6 million kronor) in fines in addition to his prison sentence.

George Santos' lawyers had argued for a two-year prison sentence, as they believed he had shown remorse for his actions. However, the judge sided with the prosecutor and sentenced him to 87 months in prison, over 7 years.

The controversial Republican Santos was expelled from the US House of Representatives in December 2023 after an investigation found "overwhelming evidence" of lies and financial deceit. Among other things, he received unemployment benefits despite working, and he also pocketed campaign contributions.

It was the first time in 20 years, and only the sixth time in American history, that a member of the House of Representatives was expelled from the chamber.
