High-ranking commanders in Israel's military will receive formal sanctions for the first time for shortcomings before or during Hamas attacks on the country on October 7, 2023.

They failed in their mission to defend the people of Israel, army chief Eyal Zamir announced on Sunday. At the time, he had held a series of meetings with generals and senior commanders, regarding the results of an investigation that had been conducted.

Three major generals who have previously left their positions of their own accord have continued as reservists, but are now being completely discharged from military service.

Major General Shlomi Binder, who heads Israel's military intelligence, was head of the military's operational department responsible for handling crisis situations in October 2023. He will be formally reprimanded, but will remain in his current position.

The respective top commanders of the Air Force and Navy are also being blamed for failures to defend against Hamas attacks.

A brigadier general who was in operational command of the military intelligence service at the time of the attack is being kicked out of the military completely, as are two other brigadier generals who led the units involved.

Most of the military and security forces' commanders resigned from their posts after the October 7 attacks.
