Adam al-Najjar and his mother, pediatrician Alaa al-Najjar, arrived in Milan on Wednesday evening. They are the only survivors from the al-Najjar family after the attack on their home in Khan Yunis.

The 11-year-old is to be treated for "multiple fractures" at the Niguarda hospital, according to Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani in Italian radio.

Adam also has severe burns and has been forced to amputate a hand.

"Remember every scream"

Mother Alaa al-Najjar was at work at the Nasser hospital when an Israeli bomb hit the family's house on May 23. Upon her return home, she was met with smoke and rubble, the house was on fire and nine of her ten children had been killed, burned beyond recognition. They were between seven months and 12 years old.

Husband Hamdi al-Najjar, also a doctor, had severe injuries and died a week later in the hospital.

My little ones are in heaven. There they will find everything they did not have here, said Alaa al-Najjar in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Repubblica before the trip.

I remember everything. Every detail, every minute, every scream. But to remember is too painful, so I try to keep my focus entirely on Adam.

80s Palestinians

In the interview, Adam al-Najjar describes his hopes for the future: to live in a beautiful place where his mother is not sad.

A beautiful place is a place where there are no bombs. A beautiful place where houses are not destroyed and I go to school.

Of his dreams about school, he says:

The school has desks, the children go to their lessons and then they go out and play and no one dies.

Adam and his mother are part of a group of around 80 Palestinians – sick, injured and their relatives – who have been evacuated from the Gaza Strip and arrived in Italy for treatment on Wednesday, according to the news agency Ansa.
