Food Shortages Force Gaza Soup Kitchens to Close Amid Blockade

The aid organization World Central Kitchen) WCK is closing its soup kitchens in Gaza. The reason is that there is hardly any food left to cook as a consequence of Israel's blockade of humanitarian aid.

Since the beginning of the war, WCK has served more than 130 million meals and baked over 80 million loaves of bread. But now it cannot continue, the organization announces.

Our trucks - loaded with food and supplies - are waiting in Egypt, Jordan, and Israel, ready to drive into Gaza, says WCK's founder José Andrés.

But they cannot move without permission. Humanitarian aid must be allowed to flow.

The blockade was introduced. According to human rights organizations, it is about a "starvation tactic" that can constitute a war crime.

Undernourishment and hunger are becoming increasingly common in Gaza as Israel's blockade has entered its third month. According to aid organizations, the lack of food and other supplies has made the area approach starvation.

The Red Cross directs sharp criticism towards Israel's "unacceptable" blockade of aid on Thursday. The coming days are entirely crucial, according to Pierre Krahenbühl, Director-General of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

There will come a moment when we will also run out of everything that remains in terms of medical supplies and other things, he says.

According to Israel, there is no humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The country plans extended military operations to force terrorist-stamped Hamas to release hostages who have been held there since the group's attack against Israel in October 2023, which started the war.

In April, the UN agency WFP announced that its warehouses in Gaza had been depleted.
