1.4 million lives have been saved thanks to a three-year campaign that brought vaccines against HPV, which can lead to cervical cancer, to low-income countries, according to the vaccine alliance Gavi.

“An estimated 86 million girls are now protected against the leading cause of cervical cancer,” Gavi said in a statement.

High-income countries are overrepresented when it comes to cancers caused by HPV because they often lack access to screening and treatment.

Every two minutes, one person dies of cervical cancer in the world, according to the Vaccine Alliance.

“This collaboration is driving major global progress towards eradicating one of the deadliest diseases affecting women,” writes Gavi.
