In two new studies from Stockholm University, researchers have examined the health and well-being of loved ones.

The researchers analysed data from the 2021 National Survey on Gambling and Health, which found that 11.1 percent reported that someone in their close social circle had had a gambling problem in the past 12 months. Among people aged 16-44, the proportion was around 16 percent.

People affected by someone else's gambling problem reported mental health problems, risky behaviour and relationship problems more often than others.

Some consequences remained after the gambling addiction ended. The researchers therefore believe that gambling-related harm and problems should be understood as a broader public health issue that can extend beyond the individual player.
