The couple took to social media on Saturday to share the tragedy: They had suffered a miscarriage and lost their unborn son.

Cody Gakpo received great support from his teammates and chose to continue playing in the World Cup.

In the round of 32 against Morocco, it also looked for a long time as if Gakpo would be the match hero. With fifteen minutes left, he made it 1-0 when he finished off a sharp Dutch move. But he did not manage to celebrate the goal. Instead, he immediately burst into tears and had to be supported by his teammates back to his own half of the field.

But he was denied the hero role. Morocco's Achraf Dari headed in the equalizer in the final minutes and the match went to penalties. There, Morocco was the stronger side, with Noussair Mazraoui scoring the decisive penalty that sent his team into the round of 16 against Canada.

Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk was devastated after the penalty drama.

"These are the most terrible moments for a football player," he said in an interview after the match.
