Right now, the national team defender doesn't know where he will play football next season. After four years in the club, his current contract with Lille expires in one season. In the world of football, it means that if Lille wants to earn money from the Swede, they must sell him before the contract expires.

There have been a bit of discussions. Out of respect, I don't want to go into too much detail, but I have a year left on my contract and there's probably a big chance that I'll leave. We'll see, he says.

“Very good season”

Gudmundsson participated in 45 competitive matches for Lille this season – where the club made a strong Champions League. However, the fifth place in the French league was a disappointment – and the club missed the Champions League by a hair in the fall.

It was tight. A lot was at stake. We were one point away or rather, we fell on goal difference. It became a fifth place but still a good season considering what we did in the Champions League too. It was a very good season.

Even for him personally.

I know that I have done a very good season. My best so far, I think myself, he says.

Just that can, somewhat paradoxically, speak in favor of a club change since it makes Gabriel Gudmundsson attractive on the market. And he knows that there is interest.

I know a bit. But I can't say anything about that. I have also been clear that I want to focus on the national team now and then we can talk.

“Gone great”

He would rather not play for any other club in the French league.

I have trouble seeing that. Lille has become my club in France.

The national team has it good with left-footed, defensive players. Gudmundsson plays best left back, can play as wingback but in the national team he competes for one of three places in the defense.

He accepts "of course" the role as center back.

It has gone great here. I have received trust from the coaches and I'm very happy about that, says Gudmundsson.

The national team meets Hungary at Puskás Aréna in Budapest on Friday evening.
