The majority of G7 countries are facing a tariff increase of at least ten percent if they do not manage to agree on new agreements with the USA. The negotiation deadline, which gives the current tariff pause, applies until July 9.
Emmanuel Macron, Giorgia Meloni and I are firmly determined to try again over the next two days to talk to the American government to see if we can find a solution, says Germany's Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz to reporters in connection with the summit and continues:
We will not find any solution during the meeting, but with small steps maybe we will come a little closer.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also urges the USA to "keep trade between us fair, predictable and open", an indirect call to back down from the tariff threats.
Trump himself has said that trade tariffs will be the "main focus" during the summit.
