Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarillas launched a verbal attack on French star Kylian Mbappé after France knocked out Paraguay in the World Cup. The attacks were reportedly racist, among other things.
The French Football Federation reported the attack to the Paris prosecutor's office, which has now opened an investigation. The crimes being investigated are serious public insult and incitement to hatred or violence.
Mbappé responded on social media, calling the senator a “reprehensible woman” who is “unworthy of office.”
Amarillas later partially retracted her statements and apologized. But she also demanded an apology from Mbappé for what she said were sexist remarks.
