Macron writes in a post on X on Tuesday evening that both of them, Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, are on their way to the French embassy in the capital Tehran.
"I welcome this first step. The dialogue to facilitate their return to France as quickly as possible continues," the post says.
The two were arrested in May 2022 during the last day of a tourist trip, and France suspects that the two were detained in order to be part of a possible prisoner exchange with Iranians sentenced to prison in France.
Among foreign prisoners held in Iranian prisons is researcher Ahmadreza Djalali, who became a Swedish citizen in 2018. He has been sentenced to death for espionage in Iran.
