It was at a lunch on Wednesday that Trump spoke with Macron.
His wife treats him very badly and he's still recovering from that slap in the face," Trump grinned, referring to the push Macron received from his wife Brigitte as he was exiting a plane last year.
The remarks came in connection with Trump expressing regret at France's unwillingness to help in a war with Iran.
"No, no, no, I can't do it, Donald. We can do it after the war," Trump mimicked his French colleague.
However, neither Macron nor even the political opposition in France is particularly amused.
"Absolutely unacceptable," left-wing politician Manuel Bompard told the television channel BFMTV, according to the AFP news agency.
