Censorship and harassment have increased, and most things are moving in a negative direction for creators around the world. This according to Freemuse's annual report "State of Artistic Freedom" which counts 2024 as the worst year since Freemuse was founded in 1999.

According to CEO Sverre Pedersen, the development is linked to the far-right's electoral successes around the world and stricter restrictions in countries such as China and Russia.

Filmmakers and artists are particularly vulnerable in, for example, Iran, where they are seen as a threat to the regime because they have the opportunity to reach.
