Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is now reacting to US President Donald Trump's remarks about the NATO mission in Afghanistan. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expresses surprise at the statement.

"It is unacceptable that the American president doubts the efforts of allied soldiers in Afghanistan," writes Mette Frederiksen on Facebook.

Trump said in an interview that the United States "never needed" its NATO allies and that the troops those countries contributed to the war "stayed in the background, a little off the front lines."

"Denmark is one of the NATO countries that has had the highest death toll per capita," Frederiksen continues.

44 Danish soldiers lost their lives in Afghanistan.

"The Italian government was surprised to hear President Trump's statement," Meloni writes on X, where she recalls that 53 Italian soldiers died during the NATO operation.
