The announcement comes after the King met with the party leaders on Friday evening and several parties wanted to give Troels Lund Poulsen a chance.
Denmark's outgoing Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who has been trying to form a government for over a month, has thus failed in the first round of exploratory talks.
Lars Løkke Rasmussen from the Moderates, who is in a pivotal role, said earlier on Friday that he did not want to continue negotiations with Frederiksen.
The protracted government formation process after the election on March 24 has taken a record-long time.
