Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) has no plans to resign, she said two days after the municipal elections, which were described as a major defeat for the Danish Social Democrats.

It is correct that we retreated in this municipal election, but we advanced in the last parliamentary election, Frederiksen tells Danish media.

I have no plans to resign.

In total, the Social Democrats received 23.2 percent of the votes in Tuesday's municipal elections, which is a decline of 5.2 percentage points compared to the 2021 municipal elections.

The party lost several mayoral posts to Venstre. In Copenhagen, where the Social Democrats have held the post of Lord Mayor for over a hundred years, Sisse Marie Welling from the Socialist People's Party will take over.

"I am not satisfied with this result. Ultimately, I am responsible for how the Social Democrats do. Both when things go well and when things go badly," says Frederiksen.

The elections to the Danish Parliament must be held no later than October 31, 2026.
