France’s protest movement splits ahead of weekend demonstrations in Paris

New demonstrations are planned in France this weekend, but the broad protest movement is beginning to split in different directions.

Student and trade unions are gathering for permitted demonstrations on Saturday, including in central Paris, “against the high cost of living and in support of young people”.

The Yellow Vests do not want to join forces with them. The protest movement, for its part, is planning demonstrations in about a hundred locations across the country. In Paris, it is calling on people to gather at Place de la Concorde, near the National Assembly. The gathering is not authorised, and the movement has issued a general call for civil disobedience.

Interior Minister Sébastien Lecornu says 70,000 police officers and security personnel are being deployed on the country’s streets. The demonstrations have largely been peaceful, but the large gatherings in mid-October in particular were followed by violence and looting.
