The name comes from the French Resistance movement led by General Charles de Gaulle during the Nazi occupation of France in World War II.
This name honors the memory of the men and women who stood up against atrocities, Macron said.
When Free France is launched, it will be the largest aircraft carrier ever built in Europe. Charles de Gaulle, for example, is 261 meters long and weighs around 42,000 tons - Free France will weigh almost 80,000 tons and be 310 meters long.
Construction of Free France is planned to begin in 2031 in the port city of Saint-Nazaire in western France, with launch in 2038.
