France's credit rating has been downgraded by the credit rating agency Fitch, which refers to an increase in the US national debt.

Fitch lowered the rating on Friday from AA- to A+. The American credit rating agency is acting after Prime Minister François Bayrou and his government were defeated in a vote of no confidence on Monday.

"The government's fall shows the increasing division and polarization in domestic politics", writes Fitch, which notes that this weakens the possibilities for fiscal tightening.
