Until now, new mothers have been able to take just under four months of leave per child, while fathers have been given 28 days. Under the new rules, one to two months will be added, which parents are free to share.

French President Emmanuel Macron unveiled a plan to boost the country's birth rate in 2024. Last year, for the first time since the end of World War II, fewer babies were born than people died, according to the country's statistics agency.

The new rules also apply to adoptive parents.
