The excess mortality during the heat wave between July 2 and 22 was 1,243, the French public health authority announced. During the heat in June, 5,764 more deaths were recorded than normal, and in connection with the high temperatures at the end of May, 300 more people died. In total, this is an excess mortality of just over 7,300 so far this summer.
In parallel, an analysis by AFP shows that France has had 52 days of heatwaves so far this summer. This compares with 33 days in 2022 and 22 days during the hot and deadly summer of 2003.
It has not been determined how many of the deaths can be directly linked to the heat.
