France is ready for next year's World Cup after a 4-0 win over Ukraine. Portugal, meanwhile, missed its first chance to secure a World Cup spot.

France, finalists in the last two World Cups, will be one of the 48 World Cup teams this summer.

Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring with a cool penalty in the 55th minute. Michael Olise made it 2-0 before Mbappé found the net again at the Parc des Princes in Paris. Hugo Ekitiké made it 4-0 late on, the Liverpool striker's first international goal.

Heading into the final round, France leads the group with an unassailable 13 points. Iceland and Ukraine both have seven points and will meet on Sunday in a crucial match for second place, which will result in a playoff.

Portugal lost 0–2 to Ireland in Dublin in a match where Cristiano Ronaldo was also sent off for an elbow by Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg.

The Portuguese still top Group F (ahead of Hungary and Ireland) and get another chance to secure group victory and a World Cup spot on Sunday, at home against Armenia.

Then Portugal will have to do without Ronaldo, who in the worst case scenario risks also being suspended at the start of the World Cup for the offense.
