France prepares for another day of protests as 70,000 police are deployed

Shops are boarding up their windows, 70,000 police officers and gendarmes are being deployed, and around 40 Paris metro stations are closed. France is preparing for another day of demonstrations.

Unions, student organizations and the Yellow Vests are urging people across France to take to the streets to protest the high cost of living and neglected schools.

As he did last week, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez has warned of a high risk of riots and called in around 70,000 police officers and gendarmes across the country.

In Paris, around 40 metro stations are closed during the day, and the protest march has been barred from part of the city center. The route has instead been moved to the eastern outskirts of Paris.

Shops across the country have boarded up their windows to prevent break-ins and looting.

Demonstrations in recent weeks have brought hundreds of thousands of people onto the streets. At times, the protests have turned violent, with clashes between demonstrators and police in several places. Last Saturday, more than 1,300 people were arrested and around 50 were injured.
