Apple is to have breached applicable competition rules according to the decision.

The fines are issued following an investigation into how Apple collects user data and how the company handles advertisers and external app developers.

According to the authority, Apple has, through its setup, prevented app developers from following the EU's data protection regulation GDPR and forced app developers to use unnecessarily complex methods to reach their users.

The fines may prompt the US President Donald Trump to react, as he has warned that the US will retaliate with tariffs if American tech companies are subjected to "disproportionate" fines in other countries.
