The Hungarian government's contacts with Russia have been exposed in several revelations in recent weeks.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot calls it "a betrayal of the solidarity required between the countries of the European Union."
One of the conversations between Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó and his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, reportedly took place during an EU summit on Ukraine's EU membership talks at the end of 2023.
Szijjártó is also said to have shared documents related to Ukraine's EU application.
"Extremely worrying," says European Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho, who urges Budapest to "account for the incident as soon as possible."
