France and Germany will provide Ukraine with more air defense after the massive Russian air attacks in recent days. The countries announce this in a joint statement.

"... despite intensive international diplomatic efforts, Russia shows no intention to stop its aggression against Ukraine", they add in the statement.

The countries will also open up for a "strategic dialogue" regarding nuclear weapons as a deterrent, against the background of new security challenges.

The statement came after Germany's Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited France's President Emmanuel Macron in southern France on Friday.

Thousands of long-range robots

Despite recent US-led efforts to put an end to the war, Merz has no illusions about a swift peace. The war can continue for months, Merz warned in Toulon.

The White House has given the green light to a weapons package to Ukraine worth around 7.8 billion kronor, the US State Department announced earlier on Friday. The package includes navigation systems and 3,350 long-range robots.

The USA is financing it together with Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway, and according to a source to CNN, the robots will be delivered later this year.

Zelenskyj: Speed up

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyj is meanwhile urging faster deliveries of the previously promised American weapons, which, according to an agreement from July, will be paid for by countries other than the USA.

We want this "corridor" (for arms deliveries) to work a little faster, says Zelenskyj.

At least 23 people were killed in Thursday's Russian attack on Kyiv, an attack that was the deadliest in several months.
