At Least 19 Have Life-Threatening Injuries After Deadly Fire at Canadian Military Base

Thirty-nine people are still being treated in hospital after a deadly fire at a military base in Canada on Saturday. At least 19 have life-threatening injuries, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said.

Four soldiers died in a fire at a training area on Wainwright military base at 4 p.m. local time on Saturday. The following day, the military announced that it was a grass fire, but it is still unclear what caused it.

Many of the injured have suffered severe burns and face weeks, potentially months, in hospital, according to Danielle Smith.

Efforts to fight the grass fire were hampered by strong winds, and the flames quickly spread to the surrounding area. On Sunday morning, the fire was reported to be under control.

Wainwright Military Base is one of Canada's most active military training bases, where soldiers practise and prepare for combat operations. The base has just over 1,000 personnel.
