It was in December last year that Czech player Marketa Vondrousova refused to submit to a doping test during an unannounced check.

Vondrousova herself claims, in a post on Instagram, that mental illness and fear influenced her decision-making when a tester knocked late at night and did not properly identify himself.

But tennis's anti-corruption and anti-doping body, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), has investigated the incident and decided that Vondrousova will be banned for four years.

Vondrousova made history in 2023 when she became the first unseeded player in the women's draw to win Wimbledon, beating Tunisian Ons Jabeur in the final. At her peak she was ranked sixth in the world but has since fallen to 122nd.
