Two former Volkswagen bosses are sentenced to prison for the German car giant's extensive diesel scandal that erupted nearly ten years ago.

On Monday, the first verdicts were handed down in a German court, reports news agency Bloomberg. The longest sentence is 4.5 years.

Two more people are given suspended sentences.

The charges, which were brought in 2019, are about Volkswagen manipulating emissions so that they appeared to emit less in test environments than they actually did in reality.

In total, around nine million cars were manipulated.

Corrected version: Two are sentenced to prison, two more receive conditional sentences.
