Frenchman Louis Schweitzer, CEO of Renault in the 1990s when there were plans to merge the car and truck manufacturer with Volvo, has died, reports Dagens Industri.

The plans fell through in 1993, ending with the then Volvo boss PG Gyllenhammar being forced out of the company. But Renault's truck division was later sold to Volvo in 2001. Renault became Volvo's largest shareholder, and Schweitzer took a seat on the board of the Swedish competitor.

The Frenchman was also chairman of the board of the Swedish-British pharmaceutical giant Astra Zeneca during the period 2004–2012.

Louis Schweitzer turned 83.
