"I am standing because my life has prepared me to serve the sport," 55-year-old Vega said in a statement, according to the BBC.
Ramon Vega, who played as a centre-back for Tottenham and other clubs, made 23 appearances for Switzerland between 1993 and 2001. After retiring, he worked in the financial sector and considered running for FIFA president as early as 2015. Four years later, he wanted to challenge Gianni Infantino but failed to gather enough support from FIFA's member associations.
Now he looks set to try again.
FIFA will hold a congress in Morocco in March. A rival candidate to Gianni Infantino, who has been president since 2016, must be put forward by November 18.
